The current central framework
The Government of India describes the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 and Rules, 2026 as a framework distinguishing online social games and e-sports from prohibited online money games. The Rules took effect on 1 May 2026.
The government’s summary states that the prohibition covers online money games based on skill, chance or both, and includes their advertising, promotion and facilitation. A “skill” label is therefore not a sufficient legal basis for offering a money game.

What this means for a named app
